skies in animations

I would like to add realistic skies as backgrounds to animations.  I get great results in 2D images so can this be achieved in animations? Are there a tutorials or past discussions that addresses this?

I did a bit or research through forums, past questions, etc, but nothing stood out. HDRI or spherical. Where do you set this up.
