From a User, concerning the nXt Material Library:

  1. Can I build on this library, ie can I add new textures to your library so my favourite downloaded ones are always on tap and I don’t have to keep going through the tedium of importing them as JPEG’s, assigning to a rectangle, browsing in the model etc and then finally assigning them to the surface?
  2. I assume there are no rending defaults set with these materials like reflections or opacity, or are default render settings part of the material allocation?

All of the materials in the nXt Material Library are single material files (*.ArMaterial) stored in folders on the hard drive, in the folder where you installed the library, usually:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Render Plus Systems\Accurender Libraries

Each material has it's settings already defined in the file, so each time you load that file it will have the same settings. Some materials have several versions of the same material with different settings and are named to reflect those differences, with names like Polished*, Satin*, etc.

You can save your own materials in those folders and they will be added to the Selection Tree Control after you click on the Refresh button. We didn’t make it very easy to save .ArMaterial files from within SketchUp…but you can do it from the Advanced button on the Material Edit dialog, after you have placed that material in SketchUp and loaded the material editor. Then you can use Save As, in the Advanced window, to save that ArMaterial file to a folder in the nXt Library folder.

A more efficient way to make new material is to run the nXtMaterial Editor from Windows File Explorer and use that to load, edit and save materials with different names, or make new materials from scratch, using that editor, and saving them in those folders.

I don’t think people have done that very much. At least we don’t hear about it much.

We also have 3 other ways of quickly changing materials in a model.

  1. Material Styles. Discussed here: http://www.renderplus.com/wp2/wk/Material_Styles.htm
  2. Auto Reflecton:  http://www.renderplus.com/wp2/wk/Auto_Reflection.htm
  3. Map- Replace Materials: http://www.renderplus.com/wp2/wk/Map_-_Replace_Materials.htm

Let me know of any improvements or additions that would make this task easier for you.
