Wire Mesh would be the way to go as pointed out by richcat - for some basics on this material - such as how to measure - what is a realistic wire diameter - etc. check out this link Woven Wire Mesh - this should be able to show you how this stuff can be cut and bent etc.
by the way, did create this as a material, only problem is I get a tiling pattern which is objectionable
