Can anyone give me some guidance on how to render an animation with an alpha channel?

Thanks,
Mike

Do you mean to make an alpha-transparent movie?
(I'm not sure what that would mean)

Or to use alpha-transparent images in a scene for a movie?
I mean to have everything in the frame be alpha channel except for the object that is being rendered. I'm trying to make a rotating logo for a video development team that they can lay over their videos at the beginning and end.

Hi

Technically if the animator allowed saving of tranparent png files you could export with a frame per scene and produce animation in third party - ufortunately animator only saves standard png files at the moment .It was something I requested a while back but never got picked up.

Can you post a link to a (Short, small) transparent video so wee can see what the effect is.

It would be fairly east for us to add an option for transparent .PNG files and, (perhaps), to create an alpha transparent movie.
Here are a couple of links that will hopefully show you. This link is to the Sketchup animation of the basic model. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9-IZ4RsTrY

This link is to a demo I put together to show you the effect we're looking for. Here I added an alpha channel by rendering it in IRender with a green background and then chroma-keying the green background to an alpha channel using another tool http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XjOvpFmWNc

Al,

As long as you're willing to make mods to the animation code, would it be possible as well to add the ability to respect Hidden Geometry as well as Camera Location and Visible Layers??? ;-)

Just asking...
Mike
Does SketchUp respect changes in Hidden Geometry between key frames (I suppose I could look)

However, it seems that you could accomplish the same effect using layers, and that is a lot easier for us.

(We keep track of which layers are on for each key frame, and which layers are active for each piece of geometry. It would be alot trickier to keep track of which key frames are active for each piece of geometry. - We extract the geometry only once, and then reload it if necessary at each key frame. If we had to extract the geometry separately for each key frame, it would be more time consuming.)

We could do this, (anything is possible), but since there is another solution, i don't think we will implement it at this time.
What software are you using to create alpha movies from frames, or to place alpha movies on top of other movies.

I presume that if we saved a transparent .PNG file for each frame that would work for you?

After Effects and Premiere Pro. A transparent .PNG is OK but if I get to animations that are fairly long we're talking about thousands of frames which becomes unpractical.
Hi Al

When you next look at the animator will you be able to touch base with object animation ? - if only to utilise `real animation viewer plugin if possible.
