I have a relatively small model - but when I start rendering nothing happens.

The model makes it through the extract process, and the rendeirng window loads, but the rendering never starts.

You sent me the model and I found a light which was causing a problem.

Becauase you used Object Properties to make a sub-component in the light a light source, we wound up creating 600 lights from this one light, and that is what made your rendering so slow. The Object Property light was making geometry which was not white into a light as well.

In this case it is better to isolate the rice paper as a material and set a glow on the rice paper.

However, because of the way the light was made - it has 26 separate pieces which are mirrored and repeated to make the 13 rows, it winds up making 26 individual lights. Since the rice paper is in 26 separate groups within the light, we wind up making a light for each group.

If you want to use this as a light, you should remove the rice paper in the original light and replace it with a single, half-column, surface so we can make the entire surface into a single light.
