Hi, I have been using Irender Nxt for a while and i am quite happy with its ease of use. However the quality of the renderings are only OK. I am wondering if it is possible to achieve the same quality as Vray with IRender Nxt with some more practice, better textures etc.

IRender nXt uses some very good rendering engines and you should be able to achive the results you seek. But you may have to apply more and more features to get better results. For instance, on materials you can adjust sharpness as well as reflection.

Take a look at our Gallery for rendering other users have made.

Here are some other things to consider:

Rendering Passes

Another thing is to let the renderings run for many more passes. IRender nXt renders in passes. The longer you let it render, the better the image gets. After you like the rendering, you can make the size bigger (any size you like), and let it render for more passes.

We set the default number of passes up as 20, because while you are working with lights and materials, you can get a good idea how things will look after just a few passes. But for more complete lighting effects you need to let it run for more passes - hundreds of passes.

Rendering Engine

We also offer two rendering engines. The, (default), Packet Engine provides faster results. But for really high-quality renderings you can switch the to Path Tracer Engine.

Here is a sample rendering with both the Packet Engine and the Path Tracer:

Packet Mode after 68 passes
Path Tracer after 1500 passes

I understand, but when studying the gallery at the Vray homepage, I see exceptional high quality images, like this: http://www.chaosgroup.com/en/2/details.html?catID=8&p=17. I have not seen anything like this in the IRender Nxt gallery. I am wondering if the quality difference is due to the software or the skills of the users.

Another gallery I would suggest you check out is the Accurender one which use the same rendering engine.

Thanks, the quality is quite satisfying.

I am adding a few comments about some of the special things you see in the higher end renderings:

Blurry Reflection

Blurry Reflections are cause by setting the Sharpness settings on the Material Wizardto a low value.

A high value (1.00) set the reflection to be perfect - e.g. for mirrors. A value such as 0.90 lets in a little blur. And lower values let in more and more blur.

More blur requires more passes

For this scene, I have intense light coming in through the window. The direct sun goes to the left, and the center reflection is reflection from the sky. I have set sharpness to 0.15 which creates a very blurry - but sometimes realistic - reflection.

5 passes

After just 5 passes, you can see how the renderer created the blurriness. It has sampled the window reflection as 5 separate pieces - one for each pass. With high blur (low Sharpness), and a low number of passes the looks very unrealistic.

40 passes

Even after 40 passes, the effect is not realistic:

Blurry test-15-40.jpg

1,000 passes

However, after 1,000 passes the blur has converged much better and is producing the result desired.

Conclusion: Special lighting effects are going to require lots of passes to have time to converge properly.

I think I will stay with IRender Nxt. I find Vray rather complicated. I find that there is nothing wrong with the lighning, but to have good results, I have to use high quality textures with high resolution. The default materials in Sketchup are not good enough and the materials i Irender Nxt are impossible to use due to very low resolution. The integrated HDR images also have very low resolution. See picture. (I have only rendered 8 passes, but the resolution of the floor or the bakground will not be better with more passes).

I wish that a package of high resolution textures and backgrund images (HDRI skies) was included in the program. Even if the material wzard is OK, it takes a lot of time to use for a whole collection of materials.

Hi, again. I tried to render the same model again with a high resolution floor and background. The quality of the floor texture is still not good after more than 4000 passes. I enclose a picture from Lumion where the texture shows as it should. However the ligning is not very good in Lumion. Is it somthing I am doing wrong?

I made a test with Vray as well, and as you can see the wood texture looks much better.

Can you send me the model that your rendering to get the test_gulv1.jpg above, so that I can duplicate it year. The model would have the settings your using saved in it.

Thanks,

Hi Rich

I had quick look at the image above and tried using the importer with a low res Teak material from the Arroway website

It would appear looking at the image above that there is something wrong with the scale, note the large number of horizontal lines on the floor, this is similar to what I'm getting (tiling of imported material), but to get round it have always just used the left click -Texture -> Position to enlarge it. I also tend to change the import settings - diffuse strength etc, and dont use the spectural that much, only a tiny bit of bump and switch on glossy refections. Sometimes I also used the reset colour option in entity, in sketchup.

Quick text rig images below.

I have sent the model by email. It is 35 mb because of the high resolution texture, The scaling of the floor is right, as shown in the other pictures,

Thanks,

Hi Vegard,

Do you use the Arroway importer in IRender nXt, or do you just import the textures straight into sketchup.

When testing for your problem I came across an issue with the Arroway importer, which reduces the scale so that you can hardly see any detail, which is what I thought were all the horizontal lines on the floor. See below.

I persume from what your are saying about the other images from other render engines (I can't see your vray images) is that the texture appears correct in sketchup, its just when you render in IRender nXt the detail disappears.

Other things to check

That the IRender nXt is set to render normal in the nxt settings window, not Colour- No texture.

No reverse faces.
